Good morning, Fayette County.
For a lot of us in Fayette County, this week has looked a little strange. The sky has been hazier than usual and the air has carried that faint burnt smell. Stepping outside has felt less like spring and more like standing too close to a campfire. It is a reminder that even when the flames are far from home, their effects are not. Wildfires burning in South Georgia have pushed smoke into the metro Atlanta area, and the shifting winds are carrying that haze well beyond the fire zones. So while the headlines may be coming from places hundreds of miles away, the story has drifted right into our backyards. All of us now are hoping for rain and some clearer skies soon.

The Tyrone Town Council approved a field use agreement with Tyrone Lazer, a local youth and recreational soccer organization, at its April 16 meeting, formalizing organized access to town athletic fields for the group. The council also took up a potential facility fee increase during the same session. No vote on rates has been reported yet; the matter is expected to come back at a future meeting. The dual agenda reflects the town's ongoing effort to support recreational programming while keeping its parks budget sustainable.
Twenty-one years in the classroom, and Matt Foley still makes it matter. The Fayette County High School American government and AP economics teacher was named the county's 2026 Teacher of the Year at a ceremony on April 16. In his acceptance speech, Foley reflected on the loss of his younger brother Andrew and spoke about the responsibility teachers carry to help students discover who they can become. He edged out two other finalists: Dr. Courtney Adams of Bennett's Mill Middle School and Erin Keith of Kedron Elementary. Congratulations, Mr. Foley.
Tyrone residents won't have to drive to Fayetteville or Peachtree City for market day much longer. The Town of Tyrone announced it will begin hosting a weekly farmer's market every Tuesday starting at 9 AM, running until the vendors sell out. Local produce and artisan goods will be available close to home for a community that's historically had to look outward for that kind of shopping. Specific launch date and venue details are still being finalized; check tyrone.org or the town's social media for updates.
