Good morning, Fayette County,

Saturday’s cold front made quite an entrance. Judging by the large limbs scattered across my yard, it seemed to pack more wind than the hurricane earlier this month.

Last night, I finally switched the thermostat from AC to heat, a seasonal ritual that always makes me a little nervous. First comes that familiar smell from a furnace that’s been off for months. Then comes the question: Is this thing going to work, or am I about to make an expensive phone call?

Thankfully, the heat kicked on, the house warmed up, and I slept cozily. I’ll count that as a win.

Kedron Pool Gets an $8.5 Million Makeover Plan

Peachtree City is moving ahead with a top-to-bottom overhaul of the Kedron Aquatic Center, and residents got their first close look at the plans at an open house inside the Kedron Fieldhouse. The roughly $8.5 million project would rebuild both pools, add a second recreation pool beside the competition pool, and replace the old inflatable winter bubble with a permanent, lit, climate-controlled enclosure connected to the fieldhouse. The bubble was damaged beyond repair this spring, so there is no cover this winter, and swim lessons at Kedron are paused until the weather warms. Because the facility dates to 1995, the redesign must meet modern pool, safety and accessibility codes. Many swimmers asked for a 50-meter pool, but city leaders said that would exceed the budget and clash with the site’s steep terrain. Public feedback will shape the final design before it goes to City Council.

World Cup Soccer Comes to Fayetteville, and Team USA Is Rolling

The world’s best cerebral palsy soccer players are competing right here in Fayette County. The 2026 IFCPF Cerebral Palsy World Cup is underway at the Arthur M. Blank U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Fayetteville. It is the first time in more than two decades the tournament has been hosted in the United States, and the first major international event at the new facility. Nineteen national teams from five continents are competing through Oct. 24. The U.S. men opened with a 7-0 rout of Canada and followed with a 5-0 win over Scotland. The U.S. women started with a 6-2 victory over Finland. The women won the first-ever women’s title in 2022 and finished second to Australia in 2024, while the men’s best finish is fourth. Admission is free with a reserved ticket, making this one of the best sports deals in town.

Whitewater Band Rolls Out the Red Carpet for 1,200 Marchers

Fayetteville’s Whitewater High School turned its campus into a marching band showcase this month, welcoming about 1,200 student musicians and color guard performers for its annual VIBE competition. The name stands for Vision, Innovation, Beauty and Excellence, and the Wildcat Band designed the day as a celebration of the marching arts rather than a simple scorecard. Bands traveled from across Georgia, including Jones County and Haralson County. East Coweta claimed Overall Grand Champion and the Gold Division title for the second straight year, and Fayette County High brought home the Silver Division championship. The Wildcats have plenty to cheer about themselves, having been named grand champions and sweeping Class AAA at the Red Regiment Rumble earlier this fall. Next up, the band heads to a competition at Fayette County High on Oct. 24 before its Fall Band Concert on Oct. 27.

Help Draw the Map for Fayette County’s Future

What should Fayette County look like in the years ahead? Residents can weigh in at the county’s Comprehensive Plan Visioning Fair on Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Fayette County Health Department, 245 Booker Avenue, Suite A, in Fayetteville. The drop-in event has a county fair feel, with hands-on stations covering housing, parks and recreation, economic development, community character and the county’s biggest needs. The comprehensive plan is the county’s long-range guide for land use, growth, infrastructure and public investment. Georgia requires local governments to update it every five years to keep their Qualified Local Government standing. The county is coordinating with the City of Fayetteville, which is rewriting its own plan at the same time. Ideas gathered at the fair will help shape the plan’s goals and policies.
