Good morning, Fayette County,

With Halloween around the corner, there’s no shortage of spooky movies on TV right now. But lately, the scariest thing in my life has been lurking in my own backyard: the dreaded Joro spider.

If you live in an apartment, or you’ve been lucky enough never to walk face-first into one of their webs, here’s what you’re missing. The Joro is an invasive species from East Asia that hitched a ride to Georgia about a decade ago and has been spreading like kudzu ever since. Their webs are thick, strong and stretched wide between trees, porches and mailboxes, which makes them almost impossible to avoid on an early-morning walk.

And if that’s not creepy enough, consider the name. “Joro” comes from Japanese folklore, where the Jorōgumo is a spider that transforms into a beautiful woman, lures men in, and then eats them. Happy Halloween, everyone.

The good news? Joros are harmless to people. Their fangs are too small to do much damage, so the worst they’ll do is ruin your morning and your hairdo.

THE DIGEST

Fayetteville’s West Side Gets a Permanent Firehouse

For more than a decade, Fayetteville firefighters on the city’s west side have worked out of converted houses. That changes with Station 93. City leaders, fire officials and data center developer QTS broke ground Oct. 13 on a permanent station along Veterans Parkway, on nine acres near the Highway 54 intersection. QTS donated the land and is contributing $11.5 million to build it. Station 93 first opened in 2014 inside a vacant home on the Piedmont Fayette Hospital campus. When the hospital needed that land back in 2019, crews moved to another nearby house, where they have operated ever since. The new building is designed to speed emergency response across a fast-growing corridor that includes the hospital, schools, senior living communities, businesses and the film industry. Hogan Construction Group and POH+W Architects are handling design and construction, with completion expected in spring 2028.

Tyrone Teams Up With Land Trust to Shape a New 45-Acre Nature Area

Tyrone is taking its first step toward a new nature preserve, and it is bringing in experienced help. On Oct. 1, the Town Council approved a three-year memorandum of understanding with the Southern Conservation Trust, the Fayette-born nonprofit that manages The Ridge Nature Area in Fayetteville. The town bought roughly 45 acres beside Handley Park for recreation and conservation, and the 2023 SPLOST earmarked the land for nature trails. Tyrone has set aside $20,000 this year to get started. Under the agreement, the trust will advise on conservation practices and shared-use trail design, lead community outreach and education, and help pursue grants and fundraising. The town keeps control of the project, and the two groups will meet quarterly. Trust leaders envision the site as a companion to The Ridge. The trust was founded in 1993 by local volunteers and now protects more than 65,000 acres across the Southeast.

Veterans Get Free Seats for Rick Braun’s Jazz Night at Trilith LIVE

Military families can enjoy a night of smooth jazz on the house this fall. Trilith LIVE is offering complimentary tickets to its Nov. 6 Rick Braun concert, billed as a Peachtree Jazz Edition show with a special guest. The free seats are open to active-duty service members, honorably discharged veterans and their families, and the immediate families of those killed in service. Butler Lexus of South Atlanta and Mallory & Evans are sponsoring the program. Tickets are distributed through Vet Tix, a national nonprofit with more than 2.8 million verified members. Eligible guests can create a free account, verify their service and request seats. A small delivery fee may apply. Braun, a trumpeter and flugelhorn player, has notched more than 20 No. 1 smooth jazz hits and once toured with Sade. The 7 p.m. show was rescheduled from February and takes place at The Town at Trilith in Fayetteville.
