Good morning, Fayette County. I hope you stayed safe and warm this weekend.
If you're like me, you spent Saturday watching the winter weather roll through our area with a mix of wonder and caution. Thankfully we only ended up with just a slight amount of ice that had my dog clumsily slipping around. Of course, with unusual weather comes the need to look out for one another. I know our local first responders and public works were working overtime to prepare for ice. There is supposed to be a hard freeze tonight, so make sure you cover your plants, and drip your faucets
This week's newsletter brings you the latest on the winter storm's impact and exciting news about Piedmont Fayette Hospital's major expansion project. Not much happening mid-week, and we can't really blame anyone with the ice scare. The good news? Things should pick back up this weekend as we close out January.
Here's to thawing out, staying connected, and making the most of this new cold week together.

Fayette County residents woke to icy roads and frost-covered landscapes as a winter storm swept through middle Georgia over the weekend. Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency through Thursday, January 29, allowing state resources to respond to weather-related impacts. Local officials urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm, and Fayette County road crews worked through the weekend treating bridges and overpasses.
Fayette County Schools closed Monday, January 26, along with all extracurricular activities, events, and practices. The regularly scheduled Fayette County Board of Education meeting was also canceled. District officials noted the storm may continue to impact school operations into Tuesday and asked families to keep ParentSquare notifications active for updates. As of press time, the district had not yet announced Tuesday's status. Check fcboe.org or your ParentSquare app for the latest.
Piedmont Fayette Hospital will break ground on a major $275 million expansion project beginning February 1. The new tower will add significant capacity to the Fayetteville campus, addressing growing healthcare demands in Fayette County. During construction, patients and visitors should note temporary changes to hospital entrances. The multi-year project represents one of the largest healthcare investments in the county's history and will bring additional medical services and jobs to the community. More details about entrance changes will be posted at the hospital.
City of Fayetteville contractors have mitigated a non-major sewer spill that occurred Monday, January 19 near Whitewater Creek. A resident reported concerns about sewage overflow affecting the forest floor, with some material reaching The Ridge Nature Area. City officials confirmed the issue has been addressed and cleanup is complete. The Ridge Nature Area remains open to visitors. Residents who notice environmental concerns in public areas are encouraged to report them to the city's public works department for prompt response.
A Georgia Lottery player struck it big with a $500,000 winning ticket purchased in Fayetteville. The lucky ticket was part of a recent string of lottery wins across the region, including a $4 million winner in nearby Griffin. The Fayette County prize adds to the state's ongoing lottery success stories, with proceeds supporting education programs throughout Georgia. The winning retailer location has not been disclosed, but local convenience stores often see increased traffic following big wins in the area. For the record, it wasn't me, but if your neighbor suddenly pulls into their driveway with a brand new boat, you have every right to wonder.
