TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Fayette County. The week started strong with MLK Day, but winter is about to remind us it's still January. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for North Georgia, with the worst conditions expected Saturday night into Sunday.

Rain moves in Thursday and sticks around through the weekend. The real concern comes Saturday evening, when temperatures drop below freezing while precipitation is still falling. That's the recipe for ice, and the forecast is calling for freezing rain and sleet, possibly mixing with rain showers into Sunday morning. Highs Sunday will struggle to reach the upper 30s, with lows dipping into the low 20s.

The exact track remains uncertain, and so does who gets ice versus rain. These systems are notoriously difficult to pin down until they arrive. But the message is clear: prepare now. Stock up on essentials, charge your devices, and have a plan if the power goes out for a few days. If you have outdoor pets, make arrangements to bring them inside. Look after each other.

THE DIGEST

Anonymous donor brings Imagination Library back to Fayette County

Young readers across Fayette County will soon receive free books delivered to their doorsteps thanks to an anonymous donor who has revived the Imagination Library program. Based on Dolly Parton's national literacy initiative, the program provides one free book per month to children from birth through age five. The restart comes after a funding gap had paused the program locally. Parents can register their children to receive age-appropriate books designed to foster a love of reading before kindergarten. Registration details will be announced through the Fayette County Public Library.

MLK Day celebration draws record participation

More than 500 participants marched through downtown Fayetteville Monday for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade, marking record attendance for the community celebration. This year's event featured a "youth takeover" with young people serving as emcees, performers, and organizers. The Starr's Mill High School Marching Band served as the premier musical group, and a youth-led pep rally at Fayette County High School capped the festivities. "We are a community, and we have to come together," said organizer Quentin Pullen.

County hosts multi-agency workshop on work zone traffic safety

Fayette County brought together multiple agencies last week for a work zone traffic control safety workshop aimed at improving coordination and safety during roadwork operations. The training session focused on standardizing practices across departments and agencies that manage traffic during construction projects. With the county's $9.6 million in federal funding for roundabouts and safety improvements on the horizon, the workshop helps ensure crews are prepared for upcoming projects. The collaborative approach reflects the county's commitment to protecting both workers and drivers as infrastructure improvements continue.
