Good morning, Fayette County,

Wednesday was a rough day for the internet. Cybersecurity professionals found two serious weak spots in some of the software that runs most websites on the internet. The pair of flaws nicknamed “PHP2Shell.” PHP is the behind-the-scenes code that runs most of the web, used in 69% of all websites. Popular website builders like WordPress were affected.

Why does it matter? These weak spots could let hackers break into a website and take it over without needing a password. Some hackers started trying before the fix was even out, and a number of websites around the world shut down for the day just to be safe.

The good news: a fix is out, and many web hosting companies are already putting it in place.

If you have a website, here’s what to do:

  • Ask whoever runs your site (your web host, web designer, or that tech-savvy nephew) whether the latest security updates have been installed.

  • Click “update” on everything if you manage the site yourself. That includes WordPress and any add-ons.

  • If your site is old and hasn’t been updated in years, now’s the time to get it looked at.

Small businesses, churches, clubs, and nonprofits run on websites just like the big guys. Take ten minutes this week to make sure yours is locked up tight. Think of it like a recall notice for your car. The fix is free, but you have to actually get it done. Now, on to the good stuff...

THE DIGEST

Books Blankets and Beanies Bring Comfort to Piedmont Fayette Cancer Patients

Breast cancer patients at Piedmont Fayette Hospital got a dose of comfort on Oct. 13 when the Georgia Association of REALTORS arrived with books, blankets and beanies. The delivery was part of the association’s 3B’s to Kick C campaign and fell on its statewide Pink Out Day, when agents across Georgia wore pink for breast cancer awareness. Members collected donations from September through Oct. 9, using bins at the association’s annual conference and an online wish list. To protect patients from infection, every beanie and blanket had to be brand new with tags. For association president Brianne Drake, the visit was personal: she lost her mother after three battles with breast cancer. The gifts arrive as Piedmont Fayette builds a $275 million patient tower that will eventually expand the hospital to 500 beds. The rest of the donations are headed to cancer centers across Georgia.

Peachtree City Wants to Hear From Its Teens

Peachtree City is giving its young people a seat at the table. Councilwoman Laura Johnson championed a new Youth Council, which the city adopted unanimously in May, to give high school students a formal way to share ideas and concerns with city leaders. Members won’t vote, but they can bring recommendations to City Council on behalf of their peers. That voice matters in a city where the two largest age groups are 10 to 14 and 15 to 19. A new Youth Activities Committee will mentor the teens. Its members include parents, an active-duty soldier and a graduate of McIntosh High’s first class, and it held its first meeting Oct. 7. Applications go out in November, with interviews in December to fill up to 39 seats. Public, private and homeschooled students are all encouraged to apply, and the council begins meeting in January 2027.

Jos. A. Bank Unveils a Fresh Look at Kedron Village

Peachtree City shoppers have a new place to suit up. Jos. A. Bank opened a 4,960-square-foot store on Oct. 14 at Kedron Village, the Kroger- and Target-anchored center on North Peachtree Parkway. It showcases the menswear brand’s redesigned store concept, with cleaner sightlines, styled displays and a dedicated Experience Center for fittings and one-on-one consultations. The racks lean on quality, with Made in USA pieces, Italian fabrics and a Reserve line of cashmere and Egyptian cotton. The brand traces its roots to a Baltimore tailor shop founded in 1905 and is now part of Tailored Brands, parent company of Men’s Wearhouse. A grand opening kicks off Friday, Oct. 23, at 10 a.m., with free monogramming on purchases until 2 p.m. The store is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Local Nonprofit Wants to Fill Fayette Classrooms With Books

Fayette County nonprofit Cards Over Clicks is spreading holiday cheer one book at a time. Its Project Christmas Cheer book drive runs Nov. 1 through Dec. 9 and will collect new and gently used children’s books for elementary schools. Books should suit young readers in kindergarten through fifth grade, roughly ages 4 to 11. Every elementary school in Fayette is eligible to receive books, but there’s one requirement: each school needs at least one teacher to serve as its liaison with the nonprofit. Cards Over Clicks encourages kids to choose real-world connection over screen time, and it recently swept four categories in a countywide community awards contest. Teachers interested in representing their school can email Loewer at CardsOverClicks@gmail.com.
