While looking back through a few past issues, I started wondering whether I had made the CIVIL NEWS section more complicated than it needed to be. So this week, I changed the format to make it look and read more like WHAT’S HAPPENIN’.

Fayette County students will face stricter limits on personal devices when the new school year begins, with cellphones required to remain off and out of sight from the opening bell through dismissal. The updated policy follows Georgia House Bill 1009 and is intended to reduce classroom distractions and help students remain focused throughout the day. Discipline will depend on how often a student violates the rule. A first offense may result in detention and the phone being secured inside a locking Yondr pouch. Repeated violations could lead to in-school suspension or additional consequences. School leaders plan to explain the new expectations to students and families as classes begin. The restrictions apply throughout the school day, including lunch and class changes, with exceptions for medical needs, approved accommodations, emergencies, and district-issued technology.
A new value retailer is preparing to move into Fayette Pavilion in Fayetteville. DD’s Discounts is listed for a 20,000-square-foot storefront in Phase II of the shopping center, taking over the former Forever 21 space near DSW, Shopper’s World, and Walmart. An opening date has not yet been announced. Operated by Ross Stores, DD’s Discounts sells clothing, shoes, accessories, and home goods at reduced prices. Its inventory changes regularly and includes merchandise for women, men, and children. The addition will expand Fayette Pavilion’s growing lineup of discount retailers, which already includes Ross Dress for Less, Marshalls, and Burlington. It also brings another vacant storefront back into use as the shopping center continues to add new tenants.
The Fayette County Development Authority has selected Darryl Hicks as its new chairman following the departure of longtime board member and chairman Pat Hinchey. Hinchey began serving on the authority in 2014 and was recognized during the July 23 meeting for his leadership and contributions to economic development efforts across Fayette County. Vice Chairman Ed Johnson presented him with a commemorative award before the board chose its new officers. Hicks, who served alongside Hinchey for 12 years, will now lead the authority as it works to attract businesses, support local employers, and encourage economic growth throughout the county. Virginia Gibbs was selected to serve as secretary. The authority also welcomed Tom Gray and John Addison Lester as newly appointed board members.

Brooks Ordinance Review Committee Work Session

What: The committee is scheduled to discuss the town’s zoning ordinance. This is worth noting for Brooks residents interested in how the town handles property use, local rules and future development.

When: Tuesday, August 4, 1:30 PM
What: The committee focuses on countywide transportation planning, including roads, intersections, pedestrian connections and other projects that affect how residents move around Fayette County.

Peachtree City City Council Work Session
When: Thursday, August 6, 9:30 AM
What: Work sessions give council members time to review city issues, hear updates and discuss items before they move toward formal action. The city calendar lists this meeting, though the event title should get one final check before publishing because the embedded listing appeared to have an incorrect year label.

Fayetteville City Council Work Session
When: Thursday, August 6, 6:00 PM
What: Fayetteville City Council’s monthly work session is a discussion-focused meeting where council members can review upcoming city business, projects and policy matters before a future vote.

Tyrone Town Council Meeting
When: Thursday, August 6, 7:00 PM
What: The Town Council meets for its regular session on town policies, services and posted business affecting Tyrone residents. The earlier 5:30 PM workshop has been canceled.

Fayette County Planning Commission Meeting
When: Thursday, August 6, 7:00 PM
What: The Planning Commission reviews rezonings, plats and other land-use matters involving unincorporated Fayette County. This is the meeting to watch for development questions outside city limits.

Baby Bookworms Storytime
When: Monday, August 3, 10:30 AM – 11:00 AM
What: Tyrone Public Library’s weekly program for its youngest readers includes songs, movement, a story and time for children and caregivers to socialize. The program is designed for babies and toddlers from birth through age 2, although children of all ages are welcome.

J. Alexander’s Peachtree City Hiring Event

Kanopy Club: Movie and TV Streaming Database

What: Peachtree City Library introduces patrons to Kanopy, a streaming service that provides free access to thousands of movies and television programs with a PINES library card. Participants will learn how to use the platform and join a group movie discussion. The program is free, but registration is recommended because seating is limited.

National Night Out

Let’s Make Things Awkward: Young Professionals Networking Mixer
When: Wednesday, August 5, 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM
What: Fayette Young Professionals is bringing emerging professionals, entrepreneurs and established business leaders together for a networking mixer at Awkward Brewing. Attendees can meet potential mentors, collaborators and clients in a relaxed setting. Admission is $10 for Chamber members and $15 for nonmembers, and registration includes one drink token.

Sip and Paint Party at Line Creek Brewing

Scud Runner at CAF Airbase Georgia
When: Friday, August 14, 7:30 PM – 10:30 PM
What: Scud Runner is an after-dinner speakeasy experience held among the historic World War II aircraft at CAF Airbase Georgia. The evening will include live blues from Cannonball Red & The Head Hunters, candlelit tables and curated tastings from Georgia wineries and distilleries. Guests will enter through a hidden entrance, and representatives from the participating beverage makers will be available to discuss the selections. The event is for ages 21 and older, cashless and subject to a dress code shared with ticket holders.

The Flourishing Summit
