Good morning, Fayette County.
You know that story about George Washington and the cherry tree? The one where young George supposedly chops it down, confesses, and gives us the famous “I cannot tell a lie” line?
Yeah, that never happened.
It was a story added years later by one of Washington’s early biographers, which feels like a good reminder that history is often more interesting when you get past the clean little stories we were handed as kids. I have been reading more about Washington’s life lately, and one of the people who keeps showing up is a young French aristocrat named the Marquis de Lafayette.
Lafayette was only 19 when he came to America to join the Revolutionary War. He believed the American cause was worth fighting for, even though he had no real obligation to be here and plenty to lose back home. He eventually became close to Washington, who treated him almost like an adopted son. Lafayette fought alongside the Americans, helped strengthen the French connection that became so important to the war, and became one of the Revolution’s most celebrated figures.
The new country did not forget him. His name ended up on cities, streets, parks, counties, and monuments across America. That includes the county we live and work in today.

Fayette County residents gathered June 19 at the historic courthouse for a Juneteenth celebration hosted by the Fayette County Historical Society and the local Juneteenth Committee. This year’s theme was “walking freedom forward,” and the day included live music, vendors, museum tours, raffles, a parade, and a community ceremony. The parade traveled along historic Church Street before returning to the courthouse, with the Azalea Flaming Line Dancers named parade winners. The program also included remarks from local leaders, a keynote address from Fayetteville City Councilmember Emmett Spurlock, a reading by Whitewater High School student Exavier Ward, and an inspirational dance by Fayette County High graduate Jasmin Colman. Organizers said the celebration has continued to grow each year, thanks to local volunteers, sponsors, and community support.
Fayetteville Public Services crews responded to two minor sewer spills in the Wyngate neighborhood on June 19 and June 20. The first issue was reported by a resident early June 19. City officials said a lift station pump had faulted after heavy storm flow and debris moved through the system. About 1,100 gallons spilled onto the ground, though officials said it did not reach a waterway. A second spill happened the next morning after a pump malfunction. That incident involved about 1,000 gallons, which entered an unnamed creek that flows toward a detention pond. Public Services crews addressed both spills and will continue checking the area as a precaution.
Whitewater High School STEM students earned recognition in the World of 8 Billion student video contest, an international competition sponsored by Population Connection. This year’s contest drew more than 3,275 student submissions from around the world. Each team created a one-minute video focused on sustainable solutions to global challenges tied to economics, energy, or wetlands. Risha Naidu, Aisling Caskey, and Skylar Martinez were named Global Finalists in the High School Wetlands category for their project on using bioengineered algae ecosystems to help address carbon emissions connected to wetland loss. Noelle Seaford was also named a State Finalist for her video on solar panels and solar-powered backpacks. The honors highlight the strong research, creativity, and problem-solving coming out of Whitewater’s STEM program.
