Good morning, Fayette County.
I've been reading a Ben Franklin biography lately, and the man never stops impressing me. Beyond the kite and the key, Franklin was one of the great civic builders in American history. Fire companies, libraries, hospitals, philosophical societies. He had a simple belief that neighbors coming together could make a place genuinely better.
He was also just flat-out funny. "Fish and guests stink after three days." Hard to argue with that.
That same civic spirit is alive and well in Fayette County, but it only works if people show up. Get involved with a local group, volunteer, join something, or better yet, start something. Franklin didn't wait for someone else to build the library. He just built it. You can too.

Fayetteville is home to a world-class arts hub that many families are just starting to discover. Located conveniently in Bradford Square, Threlkeld Academy of Music & Arts provides the kind of professional instruction that transforms local students into confident performers.
The academy offers private lessons for almost every interest, including piano, voice, guitar, drums, and strings. They also teach instruments you won't find at most studios, like bagpipes, organ, and mandolin. Their instructors are seasoned pros who focus on more than just reading notes. They build the discipline and creativity that students carry into every other part of their lives.
A child picking up a violin for the first time or an adult finally ready to master the piano will find that Threlkeld Academy tailors the experience to the individual.
What sets them apart:
-Professional Faculty: Experienced teachers who know how to inspire.
-Versatility: Lessons available in woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
-Performance Focused: Regular opportunities for students to showcase their growth.

The Town of Brooks is slowing things down on Gables Road. Town Council voted Feb. 23 to reduce the speed limit from 20 mph to 15 mph on the narrow, one-way stretch between West McIntosh Road and Highway 85 Connector. Town Manager Maurice Ungaro said drivers and delivery trucks have been using the residential road as a cut-through. The lower limit also allows the town to install speed control devices such as speed humps or tables. Surrounding residents reportedly support the change.
Fayette County's new Whitewater Creek Nature Park took a big step forward Feb. 28 when dozens of volunteers gathered to build soft-surface nature trails along Veterans Parkway and Eastin Road. The park, a partnership among Fayette County, Georgia Power, and Fayette Forward, will feature 1,000 feet of ADA-accessible, multi-use paths with scenic views of Whitewater Creek. Public Works Director Phil Mallon called the project a "model mile" that could set the design standard for expanding trails countywide. The park is expected to open this spring.
Fayetteville firefighters were honored at the department's inaugural awards and recognition breakfast on Feb. 28. Chief Linda Black received a surprise Life Save award for saving her own husband from cardiac arrest. Alex Chisum was named Firefighter of the Year and Captain Michael Greene earned Fire Officer of the Year. Mayor Ed Johnson praised the department, telling honorees, "We believe that the Fayetteville Fire Department is the best." The ceremony included distinguished service awards, company citations, and promotional recognitions.
The Fayette County Planning Commission holds a public hearing tonight at 7:00PM at 140 Stonewall Avenue West.
