Good morning, Fayette County. We're officially halfway through January, and winter is only going to set in deeper. If your place is anything like mine, the landscape is looking pretty dreary. But then I looked closer. The first tiny sprigs of daffodils have started poking through. It's not much yet, but it's enough to get excited about what's coming. Our county is the same way. Keep an eye out for those little sprigs of good things happening. Providence has a way of bringing them into bloom.

Cards Over Clicks helps children disconnect from their devices and reconnect with the real world. Founded by local Navy veteran Dennis Loewer, this 501(c)(3) non-profit uses the excitement of card collecting to develop critical social and learning skills.
From Pokémon and Sports to Disney and Star Wars, every free card packet comes with a grade-specific educational worksheet tailored to Georgia standards. Whether for Pre-K or High School, these packs encourage students to achieve classroom goals and engage with their peers face-to-face.
They help educators and parents turn "social media timeouts" into fun, educational wins. Their mission is simple: inspire kids to put the phone down and learn through family-friendly collecting.
Ready to inspire your students or support the community? They are actively seeking teachers to challenge their classes, educators to help design worksheets, and local business sponsors to keep the packs free.

A new "pocket park" is coming to Veterans Parkway near Eastin Road, thanks to a partnership between Fayette County and Georgia Power worth up to $2 million. The Transportation Committee approved plans for the park, which will feature walking trails, passive recreation amenities, landscaping, and ADA-accessible parking. The project emerged from Georgia Power's community beautification commitment as part of the Ashley Park Creola Transmission Lines project. Public Works Director Phil Mallon says the park will be "a very nice place to do a short walk with the dog or baby stroller" and will connect to future trail expansions.
Fayetteville City Council seated two new members at its January 8 meeting, marking the start of a new chapter for the city's governing body. Emmett Spurlock and Shannon Moultrie were sworn in to represent Post Three and Post Four respectively, with oaths administered by Fayette County State Court Judge Jason Thompson. Incumbent Dr. Niyah Glover also began a new term on Post Five. Council members also appointed Darryl Langford as Mayor Pro-Tem for 2026. All three positions run through December 2029. Mayor Ed Johnson, Langford, and Joe Clark continue serving terms through December 2027.
Renowned historical fiction author Paula McLain, best known for The Paris Wife, hosted a special evening at the Crowne Plaza Peachtree City on January 13. The event, which drew local literary enthusiasts and book clubs, featured a discussion of her new novel, Skylark, which was released just days prior. McLain shared insights into her research process and the real-life inspirations behind her characters, followed by a Q&A session and book signing. Local residents described the evening as a rare opportunity to connect with a literary giant in an intimate community setting.
Heavy equipment arrived at 100 Market Place Boulevard as work officially began to transform the former Smokey Bones into a J. Alexander’s. Local diners can expect an "upscale contemporary American" experience known for professional service and a scratch-made menu. The restaurant’s centerpiece is its wood-fired grill, which produces signature cuts like the Steak Maui (marinated ribeye) and slow-roasted prime rib. Beyond steaks, the menu typically features fresh seafood, hand-ground burgers, and large "cult-favorite" salads. The aesthetic will be a major departure from the former tenant, featuring a redesigned facade with Texas Cream stone and a modern, high-energy bar area.
