You may have heard the weather folks are already looking ahead to winter, and this one could get interesting. A very strong El Niño is developing in the Pacific.
If you’re like me, you’ve heard the term “El Niño” roughly 10,000 times without ever being entirely sure what it means. The simple version is this: unusually warm water develops along the equator in the Pacific Ocean, shifting the jet stream and influencing weather patterns thousands of miles away.
Here in Georgia, El Niño winters tend to be wetter than normal, with more storms tracking across the Southeast. Some of the strongest El Niños have delivered memorable weather.
During the 2015-16 El Niño, Georgia received more than 25 inches of rain from December through February, making it the state’s second-wettest winter on record. The powerful 1982-83 event helped set the stage for a significant late-season snow across parts of Georgia that March. During the 1997-98 El Niño, the state endured major flooding and a destructive severe-weather season that included the deadly Gainesville tornado.
Now, before everyone rushes out and clears Kroger of milk and bread, none of this guarantees a snowy winter. That may be the biggest misconception about El Niño. A stronger storm track can give us more opportunities for winter weather, but cold air still has to arrive at exactly the right time.
So we could get snow. We could get ice. We could get a whole lot of cold rain. Or, because this is Georgia, we could get all three in the same week.

Peachtree City welcomed athletes of varying experience levels to Drake Field on August 29 for the annual Tri-PTC Sprint Triathlon. The race opened with a 500-yard swim in Lake Peachtree, followed by a 13-mile cycling course and a 3.1-mile run along the city’s signature multiuse paths. Competitors could enter individually, join a relay team or participate in the aquabike division. The event welcomed both first-time triathletes and experienced racers, with awards presented across overall, masters, age-group and specialty categories. Every finisher received a medal and event shirt. Volunteers and spectators helped create an energetic morning beside the lake, reinforcing the race’s place as one of Peachtree City’s signature community athletic events.
Students from across Fayette County Public Schools gathered at Sandy Creek High for a countywide conference designed to strengthen leadership, teamwork and service. The program opened the school year with motivational presentations and student-selected breakout sessions covering effective communication, healthy routines, balancing academics with athletics and learning productively from mistakes. Participants were encouraged to consider how their conduct and influence can improve the experiences of classmates, teammates and their wider school communities. The gathering also gave students from different campuses an opportunity to exchange ideas, build new connections and practice leading alongside their peers. By combining practical instruction with an emphasis on character, the conference challenged attendees to pursue excellence while helping others succeed. Organizers hope participants will carry those lessons back to their schools throughout the year.
Fayetteville has revised municipal code Section 62-119 to bring its marijuana rules into line with Georgia Senate Bill 220. The previous ordinance prohibited marijuana possession without a medical exception. The updated language recognizes registered patients and caregivers possessing authorized medical cannabis in approved forms, including products intended for vaporization. Smoking or combustion remains prohibited. Patients must be certified by a Georgia-licensed physician whose principal practice is in the state and receive a Medical Cannabis Patient Registry card from the Department of Public Health. Cards cost $30, remain valid for five years and are not covered by insurance. Registered patients or caregivers may possess medical cannabis containing up to 12,000 milligrams of THC when properly packaged and labeled. Recreational marijuana possession and unauthorized sales remain illegal under state and federal law.
