Today, I’m excited to attend one of the most interesting events happening in Fayette County this year: the Flourishing Summit. Hosted by the Trilith Foundation at Trilith LIVE, it brings together researchers, artists, athletes, musicians and business and community leaders to explore a surprisingly big question: What does it actually mean to live a good life?
The day includes main-stage conversations and breakout sessions rooted in research from Harvard, Baylor and Gallup, with a focus on turning those ideas into something people can actually use. I’m looking forward to it for myself, of course, but also because I want to bring some of those ideas back home. If we want Fayette County to be a place that truly thrives, it is worth thinking seriously about what helps the people who live here thrive too.

Three Fayette County Public Works interns spent the summer learning what it takes to keep local roads, equipment and infrastructure running. Whitewater High School junior Zion Listenbee trained in equipment safety, operated machinery, moved scrap metal and learned to identify utility lines at work sites. Southern Crescent Technical College sophomore Victoria Johnson explored project planning, attended Planning Commission meetings and observed AutoCAD in use. Georgia Tech sophomore Trang Doan studied paving operations and helped with the Road Department’s move from PubWorks to VUEWorks, software used to manage assets, inventory and work orders. The county’s posted internship description shows the program can run up to 40 hours a week for 10 weeks. Assignments also include resurfacing estimates, bid preparation, GIS data, citizen-service records and inspections for compliance with Georgia Department of Transportation standards.
A career that began in Fayetteville has reached the top of the Army’s aviation branch. Maj. Gen. Phillip “Cain” Baker, a Fayette County High School and Auburn University graduate, assumed command of the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and Fort Rucker, Alabama, during an Aug. 26 ceremony. In that role, he becomes the installation’s senior commander, Army flight-school commandant and chief of the Aviation Branch. Baker was commissioned in 1996 and has served with the 101st Airborne and 1st Cavalry divisions. His deployments include Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan and Europe. He also served as principal military assistant to the secretary of defense and deputy commanding general for support of the 25th Infantry Division. Before taking command, Baker directed the Army’s Future Vertical Lift team, overseeing next-generation aircraft, uncrewed systems and aviation experimentation. The assignment places a Fayetteville native at the center of pilot training and Army aviation modernization.
St. Paul Lutheran School is preparing to extend its Peachtree City campus through 12th grade, with its first high-school students expected in August 2027. The expansion follows a planning process that began with a feasibility study in summer 2025 and received congregational approval in spring 2026. Enrollment for the 2027–28 school year is scheduled to open this October. St. Paul expects to start with about 40 seats and eventually serve roughly 80 high-school students while keeping classes near its current 20-student limit. The five-day, campus-based program will combine in-person core instruction with Advanced Placement, dual-enrollment and online college options. Athletics, fine arts, robotics, 3D printing and drone programming are also planned. To create space, half of the school’s six preschool classrooms will relocate to another Peachtree City site. St. Paul holds accreditation from the Georgia Accrediting Commission and National Lutheran School Accreditation.

2026 BraveHeart Awards
When: Thursday, September 3, 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM
What: The Fayette Chamber’s annual awards program recognizes exceptional public-safety and public-service employees from Fayette County and its municipalities. Registration and networking begin at 11:30 AM, followed by the program at noon. Admission is $45.

Fleet Feet Weekly Run/Walk Club

Free Produce Farmers Market

Murder on the Titanic

What: Town Square Playhouse presents an audience-interactive murder mystery set aboard the Titanic’s maiden voyage. After Quartermaster Edmund Fitzgerald is murdered, guests must examine the suspects and help determine who committed the crime before anyone else gets a sinking feeling. The theatrical experience combines live performance, comedy, and audience participation, with a dessert reception included in every ticket. I’ll be at the Flourishing Summit thinking about what it means to live a good life and build a community where people can genuinely thrive. I am not expecting every speaker to have the answer, but I am hoping to come home with a few ideas worth sharing.
