Football season is officially underway at the high school and youth levels, with college football kicking off this weekend.
This is also the time of year when friends suddenly grow incredibly strong opinions about some random player I’ve never even heard of. They somehow know his stats, recruiting history, hometown, injury history, what he eats for breakfast, and why he is either destined for greatness or completely overrated.
Meanwhile, I’m usually just trying to figure out what channel the game is on.
Either way, football being back is one of the first signs that fall is getting closer, even if the weather outside still has other ideas.

Every public high school in Fayette County has landed within the top 19 percent nationwide in U.S. News & World Report’s 2026–2027 Best High Schools rankings. McIntosh High School led the county at No. 502 nationally, followed by Starr’s Mill at No. 624. Whitewater ranked No. 1,830, Fayette County High came in at No. 2,697, and Sandy Creek placed No. 3,360. The annual rankings evaluated nearly 18,000 public high schools across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Schools are assessed using measures such as college readiness, state testing performance, graduation rates and outcomes for historically underserved students. Having all five high schools recognized places Fayette County among the nation’s stronger public-school communities and reflects achievement across the entire district.
McIntosh High School sophomore Yui Sato has earned a seat in the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony, one of the region’s leading ensembles for advanced high-school musicians. Sato, a trombonist, competed against more than 300 students during the audition process for the symphony’s 2026–2027 season. Fellow McIntosh musician Hannah Cookie was named an alternate and may have opportunities to perform during the upcoming concert season. Founded in 1988, the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony brings together accomplished wind and percussion students from across metro Atlanta. Members rehearse and perform challenging collegiate- and professional-level works spanning multiple musical styles and periods. Sato’s selection places her among the area’s most accomplished young instrumentalists while adding another notable achievement to McIntosh High School’s performing-arts program.
More than 34 acres at Atlanta Regional Airport–Falcon Field are being positioned for expanded flight training, hangar construction and long-term aviation development. The Fayette County Development Authority coordinated the acquisition of the property, known as Area D, with support from the Peachtree City Airport Authority and local governments. Once the transaction is complete, the Airport Authority will own and manage the land, preserving it for aviation-related uses. Leases are already in place for a flight school and additional hangar space. The project will also support US Aviation Academy as it expands in Peachtree City and prepares to provide initial training for future U.S. Air Force pilots. The academy holds a 10-year Air Force contract valued at up to $835 million, with Peachtree City serving as one of the program’s training locations.

Serve for Strength Charity Moneyball

What: This charity pickleball tournament launches Atlanta PPA Challenger weekend. What Happens After the Police Leave?

What: Rising professional pickleball players compete for a $10,000 purse while amateur divisions play alongside Championship Court. Friday features singles, Saturday has gender doubles and Sunday concludes with mixed doubles. Daily and weekend spectator passes include access to matches, food and a vendor village; children 8 and younger enter free.

Girls Got Game

What: NBA and WNBA referee Lauren Holtkamp-Sterling will share a behind-the-scenes look at her career as one of the first women to officiate in the NBA. She will discuss high-pressure decisions, breaking into a male-dominated profession and memorable moments from the court. TRI Peachtree City Sprint Triathlon

What: Competitors will swim 500 yards in Lake Peachtree, bike 13 miles over a gently rolling course and complete a 3.1-mile run on Peachtree City’s path system. Individual, relay and aquabike divisions are offered, and finishers receive a shirt and medal. Spectators are welcome along the course.
