Good morning, Fayette County,
Somewhere along the way, somebody looked at an old schoolhouse desk and decided it still had plenty of good years left. By the time I came across it, I was picturing a family gathered around it for Sunday dinner.
It was a beautiful piece: a long wooden table with drawers underneath and enough room for a crowd. When I complimented it, the owner explained that those drawers once held students’ supplies. The table I’d mistaken for dining furniture had spent its earlier life hosting lessons.
I liked knowing that. An ordinary school day from another generation was sitting right in front of me, and I hadn’t recognized it.
It also made me wonder which parts of today’s classrooms will need explaining someday. Will students have to describe what it was like to carry a Chromebook between classes? What will they remember about learning to use AI while the adults were still figuring it out themselves?
Teachers have always had to prepare children for a world that keeps moving. That takes patience, curiosity, and a willingness to keep learning alongside them.
I’m thankful for the teachers doing that work here in Fayette County. Whatever eventually replaces today’s screens, students will still benefit from someone who notices when they’re struggling, encourages another attempt, and makes room for a good question.
That old table has held a lot of those, I imagine.

A planned hangar development at Peachtree City’s Falcon Field attracted enough interest to reserve its entire first phase in just one week. All 33 hangars received verbal commitments after marketing began August 25. Those reservations are an early measure of demand, with formal agreements and refundable deposits still to follow. The privately developed project includes T-hangars and larger box hangars. Buyers will own their buildings and lease the airport land beneath them for 40 years. A second phase could add another 33 to 35 units. Before aircraft can use the new facilities, a taxiway must connect the development to the airport. An opening date has not been established. Engineering work will help determine the construction schedule.
Seven Fayette County students have earned semifinalist status in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program, placing them among fewer than one percent of high school seniors nationwide. Five attend McIntosh High School: Addison E. Bryant, Muriel M. Chan, Graham J. Johnston, Yuyu Lin, and Elliot S. Oh. Sandy Creek High School’s Simon Morano and Tyrone homeschool or online student Hudson L. Murphy also earned the distinction. The recognition reflects their performance on the 2025 PSAT/NMSQT, which serves as the program’s qualifying test. Their next step is a detailed application that includes academic records, activities, an essay, and a school recommendation. Qualifying SAT or ACT scores are also required. Finalists will be notified in February, with scholarship announcements beginning in April 2027.
Keeping residents informed and responding when lives are at risk take different skills. Two Fayetteville employees have earned recognition for bringing those skills to their community. Communications Director GlenNeta Griffin and Firefighter/Paramedic Ryan Hyde received 2026 BraveHearts awards from the Fayette Chamber of Commerce. They were among seven public safety and public service professionals selected across the county and its municipalities. Griffin has led Fayetteville’s expanded Communications Department since May 2025, broadening the city’s media outreach and opportunities for public engagement. Hyde is among the Fire Department’s newly certified paramedics. The city credits him with numerous lifesaving rescues. The awards recognize work residents encounter in everyday city updates and during emergencies when skilled help matters most.
