Somewhere on the drive home from the North Georgia mountains, I lost fall. I’m not sure exactly where. But as the elevation dropped and the temperature climbed, the windows went up, the air conditioning came on, and September started feeling like September in Georgia again.
For a little while this week, though, I had the good version. Highs in the 70s. Air with enough of a bite to make you take another deep breath. And a black bear cub sighting, although calling something that size a baby felt generous.
I didn’t need a souvenir. If I could’ve brought anything home, it would’ve been three days of that weather.

Mabel Dunbar celebrated her 112th birthday September 5 with family, friends and cake at her Fayetteville home. She moved to the city in August 2025 to live with her granddaughter and grandson-in-law, adding a Georgia chapter to a life that began in Jamaica. Born in Wakefield, Trelawny, in 1914, Dunbar has an independently documented milestone: the Gerontology Research Group validated her age in October 2024 and now lists her as 112. Her lively personality was making local headlines long before this birthday. An Observer profile marking her 101st described an enthusiastic worshipper who sometimes danced during services at First Baptist Church of Palm Coast. Eleven years later, Fayetteville is home to a woman whose story spans generations and communities.
North Fayette and Oak Grove elementary schools have earned Bright Spots Top School recognition, placing them among Georgia’s strongest performers at exceeding reading expectations tied to student poverty levels. Fayette County Public Schools announced the honor September 8. Based on spring 2024 third-grade results, North Fayette recorded 56% reading proficiency against a projected 35%, a difference of 21 percentage points. Oak Grove reached 72% against a projected 55%, exceeding expectations by 17 points. Both landed in Georgia’s top 5% for outperforming those projections. The recognition comes from education newsroom The 74, whose national analysis examined roughly 42,000 schools and identified more than 2,000 exceeding expectations. Its approach compares reading proficiency with poverty measures, highlighting schools where children achieve beyond what income-based patterns predict.
ArieForce One is getting another chance to send riders tumbling through its four inversions. Six Flags announced September 8 that it purchased the coaster from the shuttered Fun Spot America Atlanta in Fayetteville, with plans to reopen it at one of its parks in 2028 or 2029. The ride opened March 31, 2023, and closed August 2, 2026. Standing 154 feet tall and reaching 64 mph, it became Fayetteville’s calling card among coaster enthusiasts. Six Flags plans to keep its name, which honors Fun Spot founder John Arie Sr. Its destination remains undecided. Six Flags told Attractions Magazine that several parks are being considered and a location announcement is expected by year’s end. Whether Fayette residents can ride it again close to home remains an open question.

Downtown Restaurant Week
When: Thursday, September 10 – Sunday, September 13, during participating businesses’ hours
What: Explore downtown Fayetteville’s restaurants and beverage spots during the final four days of Restaurant Week. A digital passport lets diners find participating locations, check for specials, and upload receipts toward an entry for a dinner-themed gift basket. The full event runs September 7–13, with passport submissions closing Sunday at 11:59 PM. Food and beverages are purchased separately.

CITYCON 2026: Dream Girls
When: Thursday, September 10 – Saturday, September 12; Thursday welcome gathering at 7:00 PM, Friday and Saturday morning sessions at 10:00 AM
What: Saved in the City celebrates its 15th anniversary with a women’s conference centered on faith, purpose, and personal growth. The schedule includes worship, speakers, masterclasses, small-group conversations, shopping, and networking. Thursday also includes a VIP masterclass at 5:00 PM. The (M) Factor 2: Documentary Screening & Expert Panel

What: Essentia Women’s Health & Aesthetics and Arise Counseling & Coaching host a community screening of The (M) Factor 2: Before the Pause, followed by an expert panel and audience questions. Local specialists will discuss perimenopause and related topics, including nutrition, pelvic health, and emotional well-being. Murder on the Titanic

What: Town Square Playhouse presents an audience-interactive murder mystery set aboard the Titanic’s maiden voyage. After Quartermaster Edmund Fitzgerald is murdered, guests must examine the suspects and help determine who committed the crime before anyone else gets a sinking feeling. The theatrical experience combines live performance, comedy, and audience participation, with a dessert reception included in every ticket.
