I was driving early the other morning when two large flocks of geese passed over my truck in perfect formation. They appeared to be heading southwest, which immediately sent me down a rabbit hole: How do birds know when it is time to leave, and how in the world do they know where they are going?
The answer involves instinct, experience and some remarkable natural equipment. Changes in daylight, temperature and food availability help signal when it is time to move. Depending on the species, birds navigate using the sun, stars, Earth’s magnetic field and familiar landmarks. Meanwhile, I occasionally miss a turn with a phone telling me exactly where to go.
That curiosity led me to BirdCast’s Fayette County dashboard, which uses weather radar to estimate nighttime bird migration over our county. You can see how many birds passed overhead, when the skies were busiest, and their estimated direction, speed and altitude. While most of us are asleep, there is an entire travel season unfolding above our roofs.
BirdCast cannot tell me whether those geese were migrating or simply heading across town for breakfast. Still, I apparently had the direction right!

A small overdue balance could be all that stands between you and your next good book. This September, Fayette County Public Library is giving cardholders a chance to clear it. Through September 30, patrons with overdue fines of $10 or less can visit the library to have qualifying charges forgiven. The offer covers overdue fines only. The initiative coincides with Library Card Sign-Up Month, making September a good time to join or reconnect with the library. A card provides access to more than 300 participating Georgia libraries, a shared collection of roughly 11 million items, and free delivery of borrowed materials between libraries. Cardholders can also access complimentary passes to state parks and cultural attractions. For residents ready to return, September offers a welcome opening.
Battalion Chief Bryan Blair has spent much of his life answering Fayette County’s calls for help. On September 3, the Fayette Chamber of Commerce recognized that commitment with its Public Safety Award. Blair began as a volunteer firefighter in Fayetteville in 1985 and joined Fayette County as a firefighter and EMT in 1987. Today, he oversees B Shift operations and personnel for the county’s Department of Fire and Emergency Services. His contributions extend beyond emergency response. Blair developed the department’s incident command board and tracking system, helping commanders coordinate crews and equipment during major emergencies. A nationally registered paramedic, he has also earned recognition for lifesaving cardiac and trauma care. The Chamber’s award celebrates a career built on steady leadership, practical improvements, and decades of service to Fayette residents.
Road repairs, a roundabout, and two planned paths moved forward with funding approvals at Fayette County’s August 27 commission meeting. The 2027 Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant project list will bring $1,160,440.42 in state funding for resurfacing and other road rehabilitation work. Residents can find the complete roadway list on the county website. Commissioners also approved up to $512,160.20 for POND & Company to finish designing the Sandy Creek Road–Ellison Road roundabout, including a $474,661 reallocation from the 2017 SPLOST fund. For preliminary engineering, the Sandy Creek Road Path received a $1 million federal-aid grant and a $250,000 local match. The Woodland Link Path in Fayetteville received a $640,000 federal-aid grant, with Fayetteville reimbursing the $160,000 local match. That project is part of Connect Fayette’s countywide path master plan.
