Good morning, Fayette County.
Good morning, Fayette County. I hope you had an incredible Easter weekend and are ready for the week ahead. My kids acquired so much chocolate from the Easter Bunny that I'm going to have to step in and help them eat it. It's a sacrifice, but somebody's got to do it.
Post-Easter is always an interesting stretch. The sugar high fades, the pastel decorations come down, and real life kicks back in. But the good news is there's plenty happening around the county this week to keep the momentum going.
I'm also trying something fun and new this week for the Fayette Flyer. Down towards the bottom of this issue, you'll find a referral link. If you share the Flyer with 3 people who subscribe, I'll give you or a family member a special birthday shoutout when their birthday rolls around. It's a small thing, but I think it could be a fun way to keep growing this community together. I appreciate every one of you who reads and shares the Flyer, and this is just one way I can give a little something back.

Fayette County Fire and EMS entered a new era of emergency response on April 1, when two new Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances were placed into service at Fire Station 6 in Brooks and Fire Station 7 in Woolsey. The additions mean every one of the county's nine fire stations now has an ALS transport unit on site, with two additional units on standby. Fire Chief Jeffrey Hill called it "a monumental step forward," noting that the department already maintains an average response time of under six minutes. The department responded to more than 12,500 emergency calls in 2025.
Jason Anderson, a 43-year-old Peachtree City husband and father of three, is sharing his colorectal cancer diagnosis in hopes that others will take the risk seriously and get screened earlier. Anderson, who was treated at Piedmont Fayette Hospital, rang the oncology bell on April 2 to mark progress in his treatment. His radiation oncologist, Dr. Charles Woods, says the hospital is now seeing colorectal patients even in their 30s and points to processed food as a likely contributing factor. National guidelines now recommend colonoscopy screenings starting at 45. Colon cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in U.S. men under 50, and three in four younger adults are diagnosed at an advanced stage.
Residents concerned about data center development in Fayette County have some reassurance this week. Fayette County Development Authority President and CEO Niki Vanderslice told the Brooks Town Council that the authority is not actively pursuing additional data center projects in the county. "There is not another single parcel that is zoned appropriately for data centers in Fayette County," she said. The one exception is a 161-acre site at the intersection of Highway 74 and Kirkley Road in Tyrone, which the development authority helped facilitate to bolster Tyrone's predominantly residential tax base. Peachtree City lacks adequate land, and Fayetteville has implemented restrictive policies against data centers.
A pair of government meetings are on the calendar this week. Tuesday, April 7th, the Fayette County Transportation Committee will hold its regular meeting at 1:30 PM at the Fayette County Administrative Complex. The committee advises on county transportation planning, road projects, and infrastructure priorities. Later in the week, Thursday, April 9th, the Fayette County Board of Commissioners will meet at 5:00 PM at the Administrative Complex for its regular session.
