Good morning, Fayette County.
The final whistle has sounded, Spain has lifted the trophy, and the World Cup is officially over. For most of the country, that means soccer will slowly retreat from television screens and everyday conversation. The jerseys will return to the closet, the temporary experts will stop debating formations, and many Americans will turn their attention toward the approaching football season. Here in Fayette County, however, soccer is not going anywhere.
The newly opened Arthur M. Blank U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Fayetteville is now the year-round home of U.S. Soccer. The players, coaches, scouts and staff responsible for building the future of the sport in this country will be doing much of that work right here in our backyard. That makes Fayette County part of a much bigger story. The next generation of national team players will train here. Coaching strategies will be developed here. Young athletes from around the country will arrive here hoping to take another step toward representing the United States on the world stage.
Four years from now, when another American team walks onto the field carrying the hopes of the country, part of that journey will have run through Fayetteville. So while much of America says goodbye to the World Cup, Fayette County gets to ask a more interesting question: What comes next?

A new piece of public art is inviting visitors to sit down and stay awhile on Fayetteville’s Courthouse Square. Atlanta artist Eric Nine recently unveiled “The Space Between Us,” an abstract painted bench inspired by the way ancient communities gathered around fires to talk, build relationships, and share stories. The bench is located just north of the Historic Fayette County Courthouse, across the street from Gremlin Growlers. City officials hope it will serve as more than decoration by encouraging conversations, memories, and a stronger sense of connection downtown. The installation is one of the first projects completed through Fayetteville’s new public art placement plan. It follows the recent unveiling of “A Place to Imagine,” a large mural by Peachtree City artist Krystal Maynor located one block away.
Fayette County Public Schools will require students to keep personal electronic devices turned off and stored out of sight beginning with the 2026–2027 school year. The new policy applies throughout the school day, including lunch and time between classes. Cell phones, smartwatches, smart glasses, tablets, earbuds, and similar devices must remain inside a book bag or purse from 8:35 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. School officials say the change is intended to reduce distractions, improve classroom focus, encourage more face-to-face interaction, and support student well-being. Exceptions will be allowed for medically necessary devices, accommodations included in an IEP or Section 504 Plan, district-issued instructional technology, and emergency or safety situations. The district is asking families to help students adjust before the new school year begins.
The Starr’s Mill Tunnel Project has been named the 2026 Georgia Public Works Project of the Year in its transportation category. The award recognizes public infrastructure projects that stand out for planning, execution, and community impact. Opened in July 2025, the tunnel creates a safer crossing beneath busy traffic for pedestrians, bicyclists, and golf cart users. It also connects nearby neighborhoods and paths with Peeples Elementary, Rising Starr Middle, and Starr’s Mill High School. The project required extensive coordination between Fayette County, Peachtree City, the school system, engineers, contractors, utilities, and nearby residents. Crews also had to work around drainage, terrain, traffic, and limited construction space. Funded through Fayette County’s 2017 SPLOST program, the project was recognized for improving safety, mobility, and long-term connectivity in the Starr’s Mill area.

Adoptable at Fayette Humane Society
Monday begins at 9:00 AM, the Tyrone Downtown Development Authority holds a special called meeting in the Council Chambers at Tyrone Town Hall, 950 Senoia Road. The authority works on downtown redevelopment, investment and efforts intended to strengthen Tyrone’s town center. The official listing confirms the meeting, although a detailed agenda was not publicly available. The day concludes with the Fayette County Board of Education’s regular business meeting at 7:00 PM in Building A of the LaFayette Educational Center, 205 LaFayette Avenue in Fayetteville. An agenda review begins at 6:30 PM. School board meetings cover district policies, finances, staffing and operations affecting Fayette County’s public schools.
Tuesday opens at 8:30 AM with the Peachtree City Water and Sewerage Authority Board of Directors at the authority’s administrative building, 1127 Highway 74 South. This board oversees Peachtree City’s sewer system, infrastructure planning, finances and utility operations. At 6:00 PM, the Peachtree City Airport Authority meets at the Aviation Center, 7 Falcon Drive. The authority owns and operates Atlanta Regional Airport–Falcon Field and handles matters involving airport facilities, operations, finances and long-term development.
No confirmed government meetings were found for Wednesday.
Thursday begins at 4:00 PM with the Fayette County Development Authority’s regular board meeting at 255 Glynn Street South in Fayetteville. The authority works on business recruitment, economic-development projects and investment intended to expand the county’s employment and commercial base. At 5:30 PM, the Fayetteville City Council holds a called meeting in the Council Chamber at City Hall, 210 Stonewall Avenue West. The week’s final confirmed meeting begins at 7:00 PM, when the Tyrone Planning Commission convenes in the Council Chambers at Town Hall, 950 Senoia Road.
Residents accustomed to the Fayette County Board of Commissioners’ normal fourth-Thursday schedule should note that the commission’s July 23 regular meeting has been canceled.

Activity Tables at the Library

What: Peachtree City Library will set up self-paced early-learning stations with coloring, cars, blocks and other hands-on activities for young children. Families can move between the tables at their own pace, and no registration is required.

McCurry Park Playground Public Input Meeting

What: Fayette County Parks and Recreation is inviting residents to review plans for refurbishing the playground at McCurry Park. Staff will present the proposed design concepts and discuss inclusive features intended to accommodate a range of physical and sensory needs. Residents will also have an opportunity to provide feedback before the project moves forward.

Scud Runner at CAF Airbase Georgia
When: Friday, August 14, 7:30 PM – 10:30 PM
What: Scud Runner is an after-dinner speakeasy experience held among the historic World War II aircraft at CAF Airbase Georgia. The evening will include live blues from Cannonball Red & The Head Hunters, candlelit tables and curated tastings from Georgia wineries and distilleries. Guests will enter through a hidden entrance, and representatives from the participating beverage makers will be available to discuss the selections. The event is for ages 21 and older, cashless and subject to a dress code shared with ticket holders.
