I was driving up Glynn Street trying not to drop any pieces of bagel in my lap when I heard three words uttered over the radio that brought summer to a screeching halt.
Back to school.
Already? There are still firework remnants in the driveways, the coolers are barely emptied, and my brain is very much still operating on summer time. But sure enough, the signs are starting to show up. School supplies are making their annual march to the front of the store, Meet the Teacher dates are beginning to appear, and parents everywhere are about to discover that the shoes which fit perfectly in June have somehow become too small.
It happens every year, and somehow it still sneaks up on us.
One minute you’re watching fireworks light up the sky, and the next you’re standing in an aisle trying to remember whether your kid needs some very specific folder color that will apparently determine the course of their professional future.

Southern Conservation Trust is accepting applications for the Flint Rising Conservation Assistance Fund, a new effort aimed at helping landowners in Fayette and Coweta counties protect land for the long term. The fund is part of SCT’s broader Flint Rising Initiative, which focuses on conservation, watershed health, and thoughtful growth in the upper Flint River region. With support from founding partner Georgia Power, the program is designed to reduce some of the financial and logistical hurdles that can come with conservation easements. Eligible projects may include farms, forests, waterways, natural habitats, and other properties with strong conservation value. Funding can help with planning, due diligence, project coordination, and stewardship costs. Applications are open through August 12. A Georgia Lottery player in Fayetteville recently claimed a $1 million prize from a scratch-off ticket. The winning ticket came from the 50X The Money game and was purchased at the Publix Super Market at 840 Glynn Street in Fayetteville, according to Georgia Lottery officials. The prize was claimed on June 22. Lottery officials did not release the winner’s name in the initial announcement. The Fayetteville win was part of a larger round of big prizes reported across Georgia, with players in several communities taking home major lottery payouts. For one local player, a stop at Publix turned into a seven-figure surprise.
Former Brooks Elementary students, teachers, staff, and school leaders gathered this spring for a reunion celebrating the school and the close-knit community it created. Although the building is now home to Liberty Tech Charter, many former Brooks families still see it as a meaningful part of their childhood. April Cunningham Parker and Danielle Odom Killingsworth organized the reunion, bringing together classmates and longtime staff members who helped shape generations of students. Among those attending were former principal Wayne Stone, who led Brooks Elementary for 29 years, longtime secretary Carol Green, and former librarian Zan Yarbrough, who served the school for 30 years. Parker and Killingsworth have now organized five reunions, helping former students and staff keep the Brooks Elementary connection alive years after the school closed.
